Settling Into Fall: Getting Your Minnesota Home Ready for Winter

There’s something familiar about the shift into fall. School schedules settle into place, evening activities fill the calendar, and we trade summer’s flexibility for a more predictable routine. The mornings feel cooler, the days get shorter, and suddenly, we’re reaching for a sweatshirt before heading out the door.

As we get back into the swing of things, our homes deserve a little seasonal attention, too.

Here in Minnesota, we know what’s coming: freezing temperatures, snow-covered driveways, and plenty of time spent indoors. Taking care of a few maintenance tasks now can help make the transition smoother—and help keep small problems from becoming winter headaches.

Here are a few things to work into your fall schedule before the cold settles in.

Give your heating system a little attention.

Before your furnace becomes the hardest-working appliance in the house, schedule its annual professional maintenance. Check the filter and clean or replace it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Fall is also a good time to revisit your thermostat schedule as work, school, and family routines change. A little preparation now can help keep your home comfortable when temperatures drop.

Check for drafts before you feel them all winter.

Does one room always feel colder than the rest? Can you feel a draft around the front door? Take a look at weatherstripping and caulking around windows and exterior doors, and address worn or damaged areas. Sealing air leaks can help keep warm air inside and make those chilly corners more comfortable.

Make room for rain and melting snow to drain.

Falling leaves are beautiful—until they collect in the gutters. Arrange to have leaves and debris cleared out, and check that downspouts direct water away from your foundation. While you’re outside, look from the ground for obvious roof or gutter damage that deserves professional attention before winter.

Put outdoor water systems on your list before the first freeze.

Disconnect, drain, and store garden hoses, including those attached to frost-free faucets. Outdoor faucets and water lines should be winterized according to their design, and irrigation systems need appropriate winter preparation, too. If you’re unsure what your system requires, schedule a professional to help. Water left behind can freeze and damage pipes or fittings.

Think back to last winter’s trouble spots.

Did you notice ice buildup along the roof edge or water stains on a ceiling? Don’t wait for another snowy season to investigate. Ice dams can form when heat escaping from the home melts roof snow that later refreezes near the colder roof edge. Clean gutters alone won’t solve that problem. A qualified professional can evaluate attic air leaks and insulation and recommend improvements.

Make everyday winter routines easier.

Think about that first snowy morning. Are your shovels easy to reach? Is the snowblower ready? Is there space in the garage for the car, or are summer projects still taking over?

Store patio cushions, organize outdoor equipment, and bring winter supplies within easy reach. Inside, give boots, coats, and wet mittens a designated landing spot. These small changes can make busy mornings feel a little more manageable.

You don’t have to tackle everything in one weekend. Start with tasks that need to happen before freezing weather, schedule any professional help, and spread the rest across a few afternoons. Adding home maintenance to your fall routine makes it easier to stay ahead of the season while still enjoying everything we love about autumn.
